50/1 metamorphosis, Galerie Luisa Hansen

Metamorphosis 50/1, the first exhibition of the anniversary year, represents both new beginnings and continuity – the gallery space is transformed, changed, and yet remains true to itself and its history as a place of encounter with contemporary art through the help of three artistic positions. As curators, Stefan Hausen and Markus Kersting have invited three artists who often focus on site-specific elements in their work.

With Baptiste Debombourg from Paris, a well-known figure in the Rhineland and beyond, returns. His space-filling, wave-shaped installation made of broken glass in the Abbey of Brauweiler is still well-remembered. Debombourg transforms both architectures and everyday materials. In the exhibition at Luisa Hausen, he presents, among other things, mirror objects that take on a mask-like quality and, almost like in a funhouse mirror, reflect the viewer in a surprising way. For the first time, the artist also shows a new series of hybrid drawings, where he works on architectural plans with graffiti – a precursor to later appropriation by the street?

Jan Ribbers, a master student in the architecture class of Inge Vinck at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, also transforms spaces. He subtly alters perspectives, wraps architectural elements, changes their visual statics, and creates new sightlines and viewing experiences. A current example of this playful approach to the altered perception of architecture and its components was, among others, on display until the end of October in the exhibition « Verlaufen » at the Wachhaus at the entrance of the Raketenstation Hombroich.

Damir Radovic, also from Paris, is a painter, draftsman, and sculptor who plays with almost child-like ease with colors, symbols, and the perception of the present in his work. Drawing on his current museum exhibition at the Musée d’Art Contemporain Lyon, Radovic designs the front facade of the gallery with his signature statement ‘NO MORE’ and another meaningful word.
